SimpleHelp v
6.0
SimpleHelp
6.0 Prerelease
20260327-150806
New Features
- Security Audit - Added a new Security Audit feature designed to keep your server secure. The audit will highlight configuration settings that could be tightened, and can be used to ensure your server is correctly configured.
- Technician Authorisation - SimpleHelp can be configured to force new Technician logins from unknown devices to be manually vetted and approved. Approvals can be performed by a server administrator, or emails can be sent to the account owner to self-authorise.
- Access Panel Improvements - a range of improvements have been made to the Access tab:
- Columns in the table view can now be picked, reordered or sorted.
- Group hierarchy labels can now be used to easily navigate to a parent group.
- The network interfaces and disks of the remote machine are better presented.
- Hardware details will now include GPU information from the remote machine.
- Remote Access Service Approval - New Remote Access Service installations can be placed in a triage group until approved. Prior to approval, services will register and share information with the server but sessions cannot be started until the service is trusted.
- Firewall - A new application-level firewall allows administrators to better control incoming connections to their SimpleHelp server. Rules can distinguish between networking protocols (TCP, UDP etc) and higher level functionality (Technician download page, etc).
- Password Complexity - The passwords used for local technician logins can now be configured to meet a specific complexity threshold. Administrators can force user's to change their passwords automatically, or through a control visible on the Technician account.
- Toolbox Improvements - The Toolbox panel has been greatly improved, allowing for more streamlined management and sharing of Tools:
- Tools can now easily be moved from one group to another by dragging them.
- Sharing controls on toolboxes are now more fine grained, giving owners the ability to share tools with read or read and write permissions.
- Technicians can now pick Favourite tools that can be run on remote machines through a list of favourites that bypass the tool picker dialog.
- Server administrators can view and manage the toolboxes of other users.
- An executed tool can easily be re-run on a remote machine without needing to pick it again.
- A summary of a Tool execution appears in the History tab, alongside session history events. The return status of tools is included when run on multiple machines.
- Clipboard Synchronisation - Technicians can now pick whether the local and remote clipboards should be synchronised during a remote session. Options include bi-directional synchronisation, single direction synchronisation, or not synchronisation.
- Remote Support Onboarding - A new onboarding wizard for Remote Support users provides an improved startup experience for customers. Users are prompted to manage macOS permissions and allow elevation more clearly.
- Enhanced Logging - SimpleHelp now includes improved logging capabilities, with separate logs for:
- Technician access, such as logins and logouts.
- HTTP-style web logs detailing incoming HTTP requests.
- Configuration change events.
- Firewall events.
- Administration Improvements - various ease-of-use improvements to Administration:
- Easily see technicians in a particular group.
- IP restrictions now include description text to make management easier.
- There is no longer a distinction between group-authenticated (server created) accounts and standard technician accounts.
- The Technician account panel has been approved, with available actions more clearly presented.
- Authentication service improvements include a more informative Test Login response, and a new table to show whether a service is on / off for a particular group.
- Language Selection - the HTML download pages for applications now automatically detect the locale of the browser and attempt to pick an appropriate language to use. Additionally, a language control allows the user to change the language if required.
- Installation Management - SimpleHelp can be configured to keep only the most recent binaries of a client application, and to proactively clear legacy installation media once upgraded. Typically, the application will keep a small set of the previous installation media.
- New Languages - Polish and Brazilian Portuguese language support added.
Improvements
- Remote Work sessions, and direct machine sessions now support OpenID Connect logins.
- SimpleHelp no longer depends on netsh to identify wireless network adapters.
- Improved OS-level authentication for Linux remote work users. Instead of manually authenticating users SimpleHelp now delegates the authentication to PAM.
- Any calls to wmic.exe have been removed entirely.
- SimpleHelp can now work around an issue where NVDA software on a remote machine may cause a SImpleHelp application to fail to launch.
- The SimpleHelp server manager can be configured to start on boot.
- Technicians can now manage the list of Queued Actions for offline Remote Access Services.
Fixes
- Silent reconnects on logins, logouts and remote reboots now connect more reliably.
- The server verification dialog is now correctly internationalised.
- Unlocking a session, where the technician logged in using OpenID Connect, is now supported.
- Fixed an issue causing the hasPassword machine query to fail.
- Fixed an issue where new sessions can pause indefinitely until the technician invokes a change on the remote screen (my sending control input, for example).
- Fixed an issue where switching away from editing a Machine Property will cause the value to be set on the newly selected machine.
- Fixed an issue where group-level administrators modifying accounts can sometimes disable authentication services on the groups.
- Fixed a few issues that may cause the Install a Remote Access Service to fail on Windows 11.
- Fixed an issue where downloading a preconfigured Remote Access Service can cause the browsed to cache the query, and subsequently apply the same configuration to standard downloads.
- Fixed an issue where a powershell script that produces unicode output will produce incorrect characters in the Technician Console.
- The App Tunnel's Local Port now binds correctly and can be reliably used during a tunnel session.
- Fixed an issue where duplicate server URLs and subsequent DNS changes may cause the service to stop registering until restarted.
- Fixed a range of issues that could cause pointer misalignment during a session, particularly to remote machines with non-standard scaling percentages (such as 123%).
- Fixed an issue where dragging the Technician Console from one display to another could cause it to be unresponsive, or to develop a large black border.
- Fixed an issue where a banned remote user will stay banned indefinitely if the configuration of the ban duration is changed.
- Fixed issues when capturing a macOS multi-monitor machine (with non-matching scale factors).
Security Notes
- The default SimpleHelpAdmin user is no longer created for new server installations. Additionally, when migrating to 6.0 the existing SimpleHelpAdmin account is migrated to a standard Technician account, and the Security Audit will suggest removing it.
