• I have a Windows server (but not Itanium)

  You should download the Windows [all] version.

  If you are on Vista or later and you see a popup that says the program "May not have installed correctly", you can safely ignore this and select "This program installed correctly".

• I have a Windows Itanium server

  You should download the All Platforms version.

  For installation advice please choose one of the following:

  • I am installing SimpleHelp Server

    You will need to install the latest version of the Java runtime from www.java.com. This is only required for the server. You can then extract the SimpleHelp download zip file into your Program Files folder under Program Files\SimpleHelp.

    Once you have it extracted, you should open Wordpad and edit the file Program Files\SimpleHelp\service\shelp.service. In this file you will need to change the paths in the WORKINGDIR and CMDLINE entries to match where your Java virtual machine is installed (e.g. "C:\Program FIles\Java\...") and where your SimpleHelp folder is located (e.g. "C:\Program Files\SimpleHelp").

    Once the paths are OK you can double click the file 'installservice.bat' to install SimpleHelp as a service. Note that you may need to right-click and select 'Run As Administrator' in Vista, 7, Server 2008 or later.

    When the command has completed your SimpleHelp server will be installed as a service and will already be running.

• I have a Linux server

  Are you running a 64-bit version of Linux or a 32-bit version? If you are not sure you can run the command:

  uname -m

  from a terminal window or SSH session. If the output has a '64' (e.g. "x86_64") in it then you have a 64-bit architecture.

  • I don't have 64-bit Linux

    You should download the Linux [i386] version.

    For installation advice please choose one of the following:

    • I am installing SimpleHelp Server

      Place the downloaded file in the folder where you would like to install SimpleHelp (e.g. "/var") and run the following command from a terminal or SSH session:

      tar-zxf SimpleHelp-linux.tar.gz

      This will create a new folder called 'SimpleHelp'. You can then run the server by running the following commands:

      cd SimpleHelp

      sh serverstart.sh

      If you wish to set up your SimpleHelp server to run as a daemon (so that it runs automatically when the physical machine is restarted) you can follow the instructions here.

  • I have 64-bit Linux

    You should download the Linux [amd64] version.

    For installation advice please choose one of the following:

    • I am installing SimpleHelp Server

      Place the downloaded file in the folder where you would like to install SimpleHelp (e.g. "/var") and run the following command from a terminal or SSH session:

      tar-zxf SimpleHelp-linux-amd64.tar.gz

      This will create a new folder called 'SimpleHelp'. You can then run the server by running the following commands:

      cd SimpleHelp

      sh serverstart.sh

      If you wish to set up your SimpleHelp server to run as a daemon (so that it runs automatically when the physical machine is restarted) you can follow the instructions here.

• I have a MacOS X server

  You should download the Other Systems version.

  Once you have downloaded the ZIP install package you will need to open a MacOS X Terminal to run through setup. The terminal application is located in Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.

  To get started you should change directory to wherever you downloaded the zip file to. For example by running the command:

  cd /Users/myusername/Downloads

  For installation advice please choose one of the following:

  • I am installing SimpleHelp Server

    Once you are in the correct folder you should extract the ZIP package. You can do this using the following command:

    unzip SimpleHelp-allplatforms.zip

    When you extract the zip file a new folder called 'SimpleHelp' will be created. You can put this folder wherever you like (for example in /var).

    Once you have extracted the folder you need to ensure that you have a Java virtual machine installed which is of version 1.4 or above. You can check this by running the following command:

    java -version

    If you do not have Java installed or it is too old a version you should upgrade your JVM. We recommend using a Sun virtual machine if possible. Sun Java virtual machines are available at www.java.com/getjava.

    Once you have an appropriate Java virtual machine installed you can start your SimpleHelp server by running the following commands:

    cd SimpleHelp

    sh serverstart.sh

    If you wish to set up your SimpleHelp server to run as a daemon (so that it runs automatically when the physical machine is restarted) you can follow the instructions here.

• I have a Solaris, BSD, HP-UX or AIX server (or any other platform)

  You should download the Other Systems version.

  For installation advice please choose one of the following:

  • I am installing SimpleHelp Server

    Once you have downloaded the ZIP install package you should extract it. Typically you can do this using the following command:

    unzip SimpleHelp-allplatforms.zip
